A bedside table lamp should stand 24 to 27 inches tall on a standard nightstand, put the bottom of its shade at seated eye level, and run a dimmable 2700K LED of 400 to 600 lumens.

The bedside lamp is the last light you see every day, and the only one you operate half asleep. That is why the numbers matter more here than anywhere else in the house: an inch too tall and the bulb glares at the pillow, an inch too short and the book goes dark.

What height puts the light where you read?
Sit against the headboard and measure from the mattress to your chin; the shade's lower edge belongs there. With a standard 24 to 28 inch nightstand, that works out to a lamp of 24 to 27 inches overall. The Carrie table lamp is bought eleven times over by our customers for exactly this slot: compact base, shade at chin height, glow instead of glare.
What if the nightstand is tiny or absent?
Two ways out. A dome shade with a narrow base, like the Bonbori lamp, keeps the footprint under 8 inches without shrinking the light. Or skip the cord entirely: a rechargeable piece such as the Tanit rechargeable lamp moves from nightstand to windowsill to headboard shelf, and its low setting doubles as a night light.

One lamp or a pair?
Match the light, not the object. Same bulb temperature, shade bottoms within an inch or two of level, and the room reads as composed even when the two lamps differ. Put both on dimmers, or choose lamps with stepped touch controls, and end the day at the lowest step.
Bedside table lamps FAQ
How tall should a bedside table lamp be?
24 to 27 inches total on a standard 24 to 28 inch nightstand, so the bottom of the shade lands level with your chin when you sit against the headboard. On a low nightstand under 22 inches, go a couple of inches taller.
Where should the shade sit relative to my eyes?
The lower edge of the shade should sit at or just below seated eye level. Higher, and the bulb glares at you in bed; lower, and the reading pool shrinks to the nightstand top.
What bulb is best for a bedroom table lamp?
A dimmable LED at 2700K or warmer, CRI 90 or higher, 400 to 600 lumens. Anything cooler than 3000K works against winding down. Put it on the dimmest comfortable setting an hour before sleep.
Do bedside lamps need to match?
The two sides need matched light, not matched lamps: same bulb temperature and similar shade height. The lamps themselves can differ if their shades bottom out within an inch or two of each other.
Are rechargeable table lamps bright enough for reading?
Good ones are. Look for 150 lumens or more on the high setting for casual reading, and treat anything under 100 lumens as mood light. Recharge weekly with nightly use.
